Suggestion for new mechanics

I thought a really interesting addition to the game would be to add a system where you progressively select different traits for your empires government. I imagine it being similar to the policy system in Civilization V. I'm not sure how you would implement this, whether you earn a special resource that allows you to buy new policies, or whether you would receive new policy selections through research, but I think this would (provided there are enough policies present) allow for more varied games.

I think this would be far superior to selecting a government like Unification, and then thats all you do in the game for your government.

Other interesting systems could potentially be spreading a corporation (similar to religion in Civ). I imagine though, that once you go to war the corporation would no longer be able to trade with the enemy race. You could use things like this in the galactic council, e.g. enacting trade embargoes against certain races.

Also will trade be more in depth than previous games? In moo2 it pretty much involved creating a trade pact with another race and that was that. I think it would be good to have physical trade ships travelling between planets and different races that can be intercepted by enemies and provided with escorts from your own fleet. Furthermore, I think seeing trade fleets travelling around the map would make the game feel more "alive".

Moo2 is one of my favourite games of all time, but I think that these are some systems that could be updated to modern times, without losing the feel of the game.
